Mary-Kate, along with her sister, Ashley, were born on June 13th, 1986 in Sherman Oaks, California to David and Jarnette Olsen. Mary-Kate came second, two minutes after Ashley. In 1987, when the girls were nine months old, they auditioned for the role of youngest daughter, Michelle Elizabeth Tanner, on Full House, on the advice of one of their mother’s friends. After landing the part, the show became a huge hit.
The girls then went on to produce an entire line of movies, the The Adventures of Mary-Kate and Ashley and You’re Invited to Mary-Kate and Ashley’s series, two live action television series, a cartoon television series, CDs, books, dolls, games, lifestyle and entertainment website and magazine through their company, DualStar Entertainment Group.
Mary-Kate was nominated for a Daytime Emmy in 2002 in the category “Outstanding Performer in a Children’s Series” for playing Riley Carson in So Little Time.
In 2004, both Mary-Kate and Ashley enrolled in New York University at the Gallatin School of Individualized Study. However, Mary-Kate left in 2005 to pursue acting and to improve her health after battling anorexia.
Mary-Kate is currently based in Los Angeles, but remains very close to Ashley. The two share several homes on both coasts.
The girls are now exploring different interests. They have launched two fashion lines, The Row and Elizabeth and James. Mary-Kate has launched a film and television career separate from Ashley, with roles in films like Factory Girl and the television series Weeds.
Ashley and Mary-Kate’s parents have since divorced. They have an older brother, James (Trent), a younger sister, Elizabeth (Lizzie). Their father, Dave, remarried and has two children, Taylor and Jake, with their step-mother, Mackenzie.
